Karnataka truck driver strike

Karnataka truck drivers are set to embark on an indefinite strike from January 17, expressing their discontent with the stringent measures outlined in the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners’ Association, led by C Naveen Reddy, announced the decision, citing a lack of consultation by the union government.

President Reddy conveyed frustration, stating, “Though the union government called us for discussions on this unruly law, the officials have not given anything in writing. The union administration made this decision on its own initiative, without consulting us beforehand.”

He emphasized the unity among truck drivers, asserting, “We already informed all the truck drivers in the state, and we will be going on a strike. All heavy vehicles will be banned from the road from January 17.

This move comes in the wake of a nationwide strike initiated by truck drivers, taxi, and bus operators opposing the provision of a ₹7 lakh penalty and a 10-year jail term for hit-and-run cases under the newly passed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The All-India Motor Transport Congress expressed concerns, labeling these provisions as potential sources of undue harassment and advocating for their immediate recall.

However, a shift occurred on January 2 when the All India Motor Transport Association (AIMTC) decided to conclude the nationwide truck drivers’ protests against the new hit-and-run law. This decision followed a meeting with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, where the government assured AIMTC members that the new laws had not been implemented and would only be enforced after consultation with the transport body.
