Aarya: A Crime Thriller That Celebrates Woman Power:

Aarya is a web series on Disney+ Hotstar that stars Sushmita Sen as the titular character, a woman who takes charge of her husband’s illegal business after his murder. The series is based on the Dutch drama Penoza and has been co-created by Ram Madhvani and Sandeep Modi. The series has three seasons, with the latest one premiering on 3 November 2023.

 

Plot Summary

 

The series follows Aarya Sareen, a mother of three, who lives a happy and peaceful life with her husband Tej (Chandrachur Singh) and her family. However, her world is shattered when Tej is shot by a masked gunman in front of her. She soon discovers that Tej was involved in a drug trade with his partners Jawahar (Namit Das), Sangram (Ankur Bhatia) and Khan (Vikas Kumar), and that he had stolen a large consignment of heroin from a ruthless drug lord named Shekhawat (Manish Chaudhary).

Aarya decides to take over Tej’s business in order to protect her family and find out who killed him. She faces many challenges and dangers from various enemies, such as Shekhawat, his son ACP Khan (Sikandar Kher), his rival Zorawar (Jayant Kripalani), and her own brother-in-law Daulat (Sohaila Kapur). She also has to deal with the emotional turmoil of her children, who are affected by their father’s death and their mother’s involvement in crime.

Aarya gradually transforms from a naive and vulnerable woman to a strong and fearless leader, who is not afraid to confront her foes and face the truth. She also forms new alliances, such as with the Russian mafia, and discovers new secrets, such as the identity of her husband’s killer. She balances her roles as a mother, a leader, and a fighter, and inspires us with her resilience and will.
